Trusted Data Sharing in Smart Cities

The goal of the project was to use the IDS standard to reveal the energy consumption and emissions information found in Helsinki Region Transport’s (HSL) and a specific city district’s data platforms. This way the data of both public transport and buildings could be taken into account when searching for ways to reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint in a certain area.

VTT and Vastuu Group created a solution that enables the two different data platforms to communicate fluently with each other. While VTT implemented the IDS connector that secures the data transfer between the two platforms, Vastuu Group offered a modular Platform of Trust solution to harmonise the data after it is deemed secure.

The EU Innovation Action coordinated by VTT supports SMEs to increase their productivity and unleash their digitalization potential by enabling robot solutions that are cost effective at small lot sizes.

Smart factory data sharing

In this customer project VTT explored together with Konecranes, Danfoss and Fastems solutions to securely exchange data among manufacturing machines that deploy heterogeneous interfaces and communication protocols. Additionally, sharing selected data from a private factory network to external stakeholders was in the focus of the project

VTT supported companies in developing IDS (International Data Spaces) connectors that enable selectively disclosing data from production machines to both internal and external data consumers. In addition, the developed connectors could be directly integrated with existing OPC UA (OPC Unified Architecture) implementations.

FlexiGroBots

FlexiGroBots is an EU Innovation Action aiming to build a platform for flexible heterogeneous multi-robot systems for intelligent automation of precision agriculture operations, providing multiple benefits to farmers around the world. Data spaces enable farmers and service companies to share sensitive data for complex agricultural operations and to connect intelligent robotics systems together for joint tasks. Multiple pilots operate on the data space built in the project by VTT, IDSA and Atos.

Reservist

Reservist project contributes towards better emergency supply resilience within the EU by researching and piloting ‘reservist cells’ that in times of crises can be activated within 48h to switch to manufacturing medical products and services that are spiking in demand. Besides emergency scenarios, this adaptation functionality can also be used to deal with spiking demands under normal circumstances.

Key part of the Reservist network is the Reservist Digital Platform (RDP), which enables communication and coordination messaging within the companies adapting their production. RDP is partly based on IDS using IDS Connectors in communication. Other key part are the shared data models used by the companies in messaging and exchanging information.

Open Smart Manufacturing Ecosystem

VTT is involved in the Open Smart Manufacturing Ecosystem project and working towards trusted data sharing for manufacturing twin transition.

Better Factory

Better Factory is an EU Innovation Action coordinated by VTT that supports SMEs to become cyber-physical systems with lean and agile production facilities, and to collaborate with artists to manufacture new and personalized products.
